Elmira College again ranked in the top ten in several U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges categories. In Regional Colleges North rankings, EC ranked #2 in the Undergraduate Teaching category, #4 for Best Value, #7 for Social Mobility, #9 for Top Private Colleges, and #10 Best Colleges for Veterans. Overall, Elmira ranked #16 among colleges in the Regional North category.
Behind these numbers is the individual attention and strong academic and leadership support EC students receive. Elmira College boasts an average class size of 14 with a 12-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio.
“Ranking #2 in Undergraduate Teaching is a wonderful proof point of how Elmira College is leading the region in educating undergraduate students,” said Dr. John F. Dolan, Elmira College President. “Our students, professors, and staff are committed to excellence in teaching and learning. The Elmira sense of community allows us to really get to know each other. They see each other. Talk to each other. And, in the age of artificial intelligence, that provides students the authentic experiences they crave and the skills employers are looking for.”
Elmira students and alumni frequently share stories about how professors care about them as individuals and prepare them for the next steps. For example, new alumna Alexandra Stilo ’26 recently began a graduate program at Syracuse University.
“EC prepared me for this next step in my education. Its rigorous courses gave me hands-on experiences such as presentation practice, working with local businesses, and networking opportunities. Thanks to EC, I feel comfortable transitioning to SU and its graduate program,” she shared.
Also driving EC’s success in the rankings is the College’s focus on affordability for students from lower-income families, while adding professionally focused academic programs in high-growth career fields. For example, the College recently expanded its majors and minors to include Sports Management, Animal Science, and Nutrition. These programs add to a growing list of professionally focused programs like Social Work, Cybersecurity, Forensic Science, and Data Analytics, that prepare students for high-paying careers soon after they graduate.
To create its annual rankings, U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 1,700 U.S. colleges and universities against 17 factors. The news organization places heavy emphasis on a college’s academic reputation and graduation and retention rates. Other weighted metrics include the percentage of faculty employed full-time and the financial and support resources faculty are provided.
