Because nutrition plays a role in nearly every aspect of life, this program can expand your career options and help you make a bigger impact in whatever path you choose.
This program is for anyone interested in the relationship between food, science, and health. Whether you’re looking to help athletes perform better, to educate communities, shape public health policies, or help patients heal more quickly, this program will provide you with the foundational knowledge to address individual and global nutrition challenges head-on.
As interest in nutrition and wellness continues to grow, employers are looking for professionals who understand the connection between nutrition and health. This includes roles at health and wellness or food science companies. It also includes companies in any industry that have health education roles where you can help build programs to support employee health. This program can help prepare you for graduate school and give you a foundation to build on to become a certified dietitian. Even if that’s not your plan, the program is a great complement to majors like Nursing, Biology, Biochemistry, Public Health, Social Work, Business Administration, Psychology, and Human Services. Having a foundational knowledge of nutrition can broaden your knowledge and career options in many fields. At EC, this minor is largely provided online, giving you a lot of schedule flexibility no matter what you are majoring in.
This program is purposefully designed for any student interested in nutrition and provides a broad understanding of the field. You’ll take courses about the nutrition we need at different ages and stages; why athletes should eat differently; how food can aid in or hurt the healing process; how food choices affect chronic diseases, community health, and public health; and the economics and science of food.
While this program can help prepare you for graduate study leading to a career as a dietitian, it also provides a strong foundation for health-related professions, business roles in the food and wellness industry, and research or academic careers. Nutrition is a growing area of research, with scientists exploring how foods and dietary patterns can help address global health challenges such as obesity and diabetes. It also plays an important role in public health, informing education programs and public policy. For those interested in sports and fitness, nutrition expertise can help athletes maximize their performance.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects steady growth in the field over the next decade.
