Elmira College is expanding its playbook to prepare students looking to enter the fast-paced and growing industry of Sports Management. Starting now, students can major or minor in Sports Management, learning the core business basics EC is known for while providing them with specific industry knowledge and experiences to help them stand out.
“Our program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career at any level of the sports industry: high school, amateur, recreational, collegiate, or professional,” said Stephen Clar, Assistant Professor of Sports Management. “Whether a student is attracted to the excitement around managing live sporting events and sport facilities, or the business of sport in the front office as a sport executive or administrator, this program will give students a strong foundation to pursue many types of roles within the industry so that they can become leaders.”
In this program, students will learn effective communication and leadership skills focused on sports analytics, marketing, and strategic sports management. The program leverages the region’s rich sporting industry to get students out of the classroom and interacting with staff at local sporting complexes to see firsthand how these organizations successfully run live sporting events. These connections will also help students secure career-related internship opportunities.
Additionally, students will apply what they learn in class to real-life scenarios presented by local and regional sport organizations, as well as during mock exercises, which include international soccer transfers, NFL and other amateur drafts, collective bargaining, and sport contract negotiations.
The sports industry provides a wide array of jobs and career roles. According to the Global Institute of Sports, sports industry revenues equal $2.65 trillion, making it the 9th largest industry worldwide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts industry roles such as Sports Managers will grow by 9% through 2032.
What’s more, Elmira College’s unique three-term schedule means students will have an opportunity to engage in sport industry-related travel and experiential learning opportunities. Students can also pair their sports management degree with other majors and minors such as Business Administration; Media Studies, Communication, and Design; Psychology; Finance; Accounting; and Digital Marketing.
“When we began offering a Sports Management concentration as part of our Business Administration degree a couple of years ago, we immediately saw a strong interest from students,” shared Dr. Patricia Ireland, Elmira College Provost. “That’s why we’re excited to expand and offer this as a major or minor. Students can deepen their knowledge of the industry and better position themselves in the job market.”
