Elmira College Again Ranks High In U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Lists

Today, U.S. News & World Report announced its Best Colleges rankings and Elmira College continues to rank as one of the best on factors such as access to professors, graduation and retention rates, impact on the community, and student success. Among the highlights, EC ranked #7 in Regional Colleges North as well as #2 and #4 in the Best Value and Social Mobility subcategories.

Among the most-weighted metrics for U.S. News & World Report are graduation and retention rates. For EC, that means students are likely to stay and successfully earn their degrees.

“Elmira College is a place where students are supported and celebrated,” said Dr. Charles Lindsay, Elmira College President. “We are increasing access to students with different life experiences and financial means. Our Center for Academic and Professional Excellence combines our academic and career services under one banner, providing support services like tutoring, writing, academic accommodations, and career support. And this type of support continues even after our students graduate.”

U.S. News & World Report also heavily weighs the academic reputation of a college’s undergraduate programs. This is based on a peer assessment survey sent to presidents, provosts, and deans of admissions who rate the academic quality of institutions they are familiar with.

Other weighted metrics focus on how much individual attention students can receive from their instructors. Elmira College boasts an average class size of 14 with an 8-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio. EC students and alumni continually share the value of the close relationships they build with their professors.

The amount spent per student is also factored into the overall score and indicates that the college offers a wide variety of programs and services. The new Soaring Eagles Take Flight initiative expands EC’s commitment to access and affordability. Also, In the past few years, EC developed professional-focused programs, such as Forensic Science and Data Analytics minors, four professionally-focused Art concentrations; a Media Studies, Communications, and Design major; and new Business Administration concentrations like the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School.

“This report recognizes the value we place on a student-centered education where students can immerse themselves and become members of a community,” said Lindsay. “As ever, we will continue to strive for academic excellence and innovate new programs that support our students as they start to find their place in the world.”
