This is the fourth of five weekly articles about our First Year Seminar courses. The articles will help incoming students learn about their course options so they can rank their top four FYS course choices by June 30.

This week’s article explores two First Year Seminar courses at Elmira College that focus on how to navigate the Elmira College campus. While all of the FYS courses teach “how to college” skills, these courses delve deep into EC’s academic and social support services.

Be sure to complete the course selection form on your admissions portal by the end of June. Questions? Reach out to the Admissions Office at (607) 735-1724 or admissions@elmira.edu.

S.O.A.R. (Student Orientation, Achievement, and Responsibility

Welcome Wednesdays: Your Place at EC and in the World

Ytzel Flores Cristiansen, Associate Dean of Students, and Dr. Larry Parker II, Director of Social and Cultural Engagement, designed a course focused on key components of campus life to optimize your transition to EC. The instructor duo will engage you with activities and insights that highlight the perspectives, skills, and activities that you’ll need to succeed at EC.

“I chose S.O.A.R. as my FYS course because I was interested in learning about how to adapt to the school culture at Elmira College,” shared Jessica Saji '28, a Biology major. “I was able to learn more about the college environment through the course activities and visits from guest speakers. Even more, I was able to meet new people outside of my major and explore topics I wouldn’t have thought about through the course.”

Wayfinder’s Voyage – Discover Your Path (New Course)

Welcome Wednesdays: Your Place at EC and in the World

Dr. Stephanie Johnson, Director of the Center for Academic and Professional Excellence (CAPE) & Dean of Retention, will use a blend of discussions, activities, guest speakers, and reflection to help you discover your inner compass. You’ll develop effective tools to navigate college with confidence and plan for a successful future. You’ll learn about academic tools and success strategies, how to choose a meaningful major, set goals, and explore career options.

“This course gets its name from 'wayfinding,' the ancient art of figuring out where you are going when you don’t actually know your destination,” explained Johnson. “Transitioning to college can prompt many questions, but in this course, we’ll discover our personal north stars so that each student can embrace their college journey and enjoy all that the experience has to offer.”
