Welcome Wednesdays: Fun with Art, Film, and Music

This is the second of five weekly articles about our First Year Seminar courses. The articles will help incoming students learn about their course options so they can rank their top four FYS course choices by June 30.

This week’s Welcome Wednesday outlines four of the First Year Seminar course options for Term I (Fall 2025). These courses are ideal if you are interested in art, music, and film.

Be sure to rank your FYS course options before the end of June by completing the course selection form on your admissions portal. Questions? Reach out to the Admissions Office at (607) 735-1724 or admissions@elmira.edu.

Animating the World of Myth (Honors Section)

Available to students in the EC Honors Program, this course is taught by Aaron Kather, Assistant Professor of Fine Art. He’ll guide you through a comparison of traditional stories of cultures from around the world and the way they are retold by modern storytellers and artists. The course pays particular attention to foreign films, animations, paintings, sculptures, and other modes of artistic interpretation.

“I chose this FYS course because I’ve always been interested in myths, especially Greek myths, but I had never studied them in an academic setting before,” shared Melanie D'Aleo '28, an English Literature and Media Studies, Communications, and Design double major. “I recommend this course to a future student who wants to gain more exposure to fables and to all sorts of different and beautiful types of media from around the world. An important part of college is broadening one's global perspectives, and this class allows students to appreciate and study different cultural products in a meaningful way.”

Lights, Camera, Re-Action!

Welcome Wednesdays: Fun with Art, Film, and Music

Are you a film lover? Love talking about movies with friends? In Media Artist Jan Kather's FYS course, you’ll view films, television episodes, and music videos to analyze choices made by filmmakers and collaborate to make creative videos using your own smartphone technology. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to demonstrate that writing and producing a movie critique means more than offering a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down opinion.

“I learned a lot about cinema history and now, after the class, I've noticed many associated topics, and I can pinpoint certain things in film that I did not notice before,” shared Angelina Addison '28, Art major. “I recommend it to future students because of the welcoming environment, interesting topics, and enjoyable assignments!”

Art Design and The Environment

Welcome Wednesdays: Fun with Art, Film, and Music

Led by Derek Chalfant, Professor of Art, this course explores how environmental issues connect to the social, political, cultural, and economic systems that impact the future of the planet and those that call it home. You’ll learn how your own work as an artist or designer can comment on, interact with, and impact the world. You’ll develop collaborative and creative individual projects that respond to environmental sustainability and related social issues.

“This course went above my expectations and is ideal for anyone interested in a crafty, think outside of the box, and hands-on course,” shared Eve Montanarella '28. “Professor Chalfant brought hands-on experiences and real-life situations to class time. We did many crafty things. We also presented our pieces to the class, which helped me get more comfortable presenting in my other classes.”

The Music of Your Life (New Course)

Welcome Wednesdays: Fun with Art, Film, and Music

Join Music Instructor, Nathan Shedd, as he leads you and your classmates through discussions about your favorite songs and artists, the most popular forms of music in America right now, and movie and video game music. Part of the course is creating your own music and a soundtrack of your life.

“Students will walk away with a better understanding of the music that is part of their everyday life, and gain the tools to look at ideas and concepts more critically,” shared Shedd. “Come join the music!”
