March 19, 2020 Coronavirus UpdateDear EC Community,

As the situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve, it is now necessary for us to limit interactions amongst groups of people as much as possible in order to protect the health of our students and employees and to help stem the spread of the virus.

In addition, on Wednesday, March 18, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order "directing non-essential businesses to implement work-from-home policies effective Friday, March 20." Businesses that rely on in-office personnel must decrease their in-office workforce by 75 percent.

To that end, Elmira College will implement the following steps:

Students

The College will close the residence halls for the remainder of Term II on Sunday, March 22. Students who meet specific criteria will be permitted to stay in the residence halls. For those students, limited dining options will be available with additional information shared later today. The Office of Residence Life will be communicating directly with all remaining students.

Access to the Gannett-Tripp Library will be limited. Please be sure to check the library's website and Facebook page for updated information. Commuter students: we strongly suggest you call the GTL to ensure access before traveling to campus. Library staff is still available to assist via phone: 607-735-1862; email researchhelp@elmira.edu; or text: 607-953-6060. Only the computers and printers on the first floor will be available in order to help our Buildings & Grounds staff ensure adequate cleaning.

The Clarke Health Center will remain open, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Any student may contact the Clarke Health Center with health-related questions, or if prescription refills are needed, while away from campus. Call, 607-735-1750, or email Director of Health Services, Wendy Fiscus, at wfiscus@elmira.edu.

Employees

In order to remain in compliance with Governor Cuomo's executive order, the College will move to a work-from-home and essential employees only mode beginning at the close of business on Friday, March 20.

In general, essential employees include those within Campus Safety, Buildings & Grounds, the EC Post Office, the Clarke Health Center, and some within Residence Life. If you are unsure if this applies to you, please contact your direct supervisor.

It is anticipated that some employees may need to return to campus periodically to complete specific tasks. All employees should communicate and coordinate their work situation with their direct supervisor to ensure adequate coverage and continuity of daily operations. Directions for transferring office lines to a cell phone and checking voicemail remotely are available in the Academic & Business Continuity Plan on the website.

This is NOT a "layoff." Employees impacted will have job protection and maintain any of their current benefits. If you are unable to work from home, there are alternative options available to you, such as the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. In addition, since the College administers its own benefits plan, there is some flexibility for employees. Questions can be answered on a case-by-case basis, by contacting the Office of Human Resources at 607-735-1812 or 607-735-1810 or hr@elmira.edu.

Graduate assistants who are currently in campus housing may stay in that housing and, if applicable, work from that "home."

The steps outlined above will remain in effect for the remainder of Term II (through April 11, 2020). We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation and email any changes to students and employees as soon as decisions are made.

I understand the disruption to normal routines, schedules and activities, and am grateful to everyone's hard work, resourcefulness, and determination to help maintain the safety of our campus and our community.

We will continue to work diligently to keep our community informed and encourage you to check email and our web page dedicated to the coronavirus information on a regular basis. Additional information and resources for students and employees are also available on MyEC.

Sincerely,

Charles W. Lindsay
President
