The Legal Studies minor at Elmira College seeks to instill you with creative and critical thinking skills as applied to a wide range of legal topics. The purpose of this wide array of course offerings is to prepare you for your first two years of law school or to immediately enter the field as a para-practitioner. To this end, from day-one, you'll be pushed via the Socratic method to engage with the materials on a deeper level and sharpen your mind and shape your character. In addition, when it comes time to take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), you can take the exam on Elmira's campus.
Legal Studies is a discipline that explores the theory and practical application of its many sub-disciplines. Core classes include survey of American law, criminal law, criminal procedure, constitutional law, business law, evidence, legal research, and writing. You are able to tailor your experience through numerous elective options – including participation in a mock trial.
Students in Legal Studies primarily attend law school or enter the legal profession. Students often major in Criminal Justice, and Political Science. The Legal Studies program has a track record of success in placing students in law schools.
Students who have completed the requirements will be able to understand the foundations of our laws, apply law to real-life and hypothetical situations, critically analyze modern legal issues, and become familiar with the Socratic Method.
Our Legal Studies faculty will equip you with the knowledge to succeed in a future career in law, criminal justice, or political science.
