Elmira College Alumni Invited To Participate in Mentoring Program

The newly developed Elmira College Under Wing alumni mentoring program capitalizes on EC’s active alumni network to enhance career preparation opportunities for EC students.

Alumni mentors are currently being sought for the program. Those volunteering can expect to provide one of many career preparation roles, including coaching, setting up informational interviews, connecting their mentee(s) with internship opportunities, reviewing resumes and cover letters, or presenting in EC classes either face-to-face or virtually.

“We have many dedicated alumni who frequently ask how they can help EC and our students,” said Paula Lee Hobson, Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Engagement. “This program connects alumni with current students who are eager to develop real-world career skills that will help them advance more quickly in their chosen fields.”

Chad Thorley '02, EC Board of Trustees member, is an alumni mentor already and highly values the experience.

“This is a fulfilling, beneficial, and easy way for EC Alumni to reconnect with the College and help the next generation of students as they prepare for post-undergraduate opportunities,” he said. “Informational interviews are a great way for alumni to assist current students as they begin to shape and develop their future career plans. Alumni have experience and unique insights they can pass along to students and can assist them in gaining pre-professional development opportunities in career fields they are interested in.”

Students participating in the program will be selected through a nomination process. Since the focus is on those who have already identified their potential career paths, students will be rising sophomores and juniors. Those selected into the program will be matched with alumni who match the student’s interests and career goals.

“According to some estimates, up to 70% of jobs are not published on publicly available job search sites,” said Rachel Redmond, Director of the Center for Academic & Professional Excellence (CAPE) and Office of Career Services. “That is why networking is essential when looking for a job and a mentor can help fast-track the networking process.”
