Admissions
Looking for a small, close-knit campus filled with incredible, hands-on learning opportunities? Our Admissions Office can help make Elmira College YOUR place.
This is the fourth of five weekly articles about our First Year Seminar courses. The articles will help incoming students learn about their course options so they can rank their top four FYS course choices by June 30.
This week’s article explores three First Year Seminar courses at Elmira College that use cinema to explore bigger topics, from sports to technology, to the meaning of life. While these courses may be enjoyed with popcorn, they’ll definitely provide the “how to college” skills incorporated into all of the FYS options.
Be sure to complete the course selection form on your admissions portal by the end of June. Questions? Reach out to the Admissions Office at (607) 735-1724 or admissions@elmira.edu.

Bit of a sports fan? If so, join Stephen Clar, Assistant Professor of Sports Management, as he takes you on a history tour of important moments in sports through the eyes of Hollywood. From a 1913 story of a young former caddie trying to win the U.S. Open golf tournament to the birth of Moneyball and many stops between, these stories provide a backdrop for an introduction to the business of sport. Clar will help you examine the connection between sales, marketing, legal and ethical issues, analytics, and management.
“In this course, you’ll be introduced to the academic disciplines explored in the Business & Economics division,” explained Clar. “Sports movies, some well-known and others more obscure, provide our roadmap for a 115-year journey through the business side of sports. Along the way, we may meet some ghosts of sports seasons past, and we will definitely have some fun!”

Dr. Christopher Terry, Professor of Psychology, thinks he can help you figure out the meaning of life. The answer can be found in every Pixar movie…ever! So, together you will explore the world of Pixar, looking at the psychology behind the characters, investigating why Pixar has been so successful at moviemaking, and in the process learning a bit about yourself.
“In this class, we'll explore the idea of how art imitates life,” explains Terry. “By looking at animation, we can see what aspects of ourselves are amplified in the exaggerated characters and high-stakes adventures they go on. But we'll try to flip this idea around, too, and explore how life imitates art. What kind of meaning do we take away from these films after watching them?”

In this course, Dr. Adam Giambrone, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Director of First Year Seminar, uses modern movies to start discussions about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and the real people behind groundbreaking discoveries. As a class, you’ll talk about how films craft a story and the power of those stories. And since the films have power, does it matter whose stories are being told and whose stories are yet to be shared?
“I would absolutely recommend this FYS course. Dr. Giambrone is a very approachable professor and did a wonderful job of providing a safe space for us to get used to the expectations of a college class,” said Annaka Stauring '29, an Adolescence Education major. “I feel like having a theme for an FYS course can make the course itself more interesting, as it creates a basis for friendships to develop with classmates. The most helpful skills I learned during my FYS were definitely related to how the college functions. During the first few weeks, we covered topics like how to input community service hours, where to go for specific help in specific areas, and what resources were available for us.”
