Elmira College Students Gain New Pathways to Study Abroad in China

On Tuesday, December 16, a group of senior leaders and faculty from Shenzhen Technology University in China met with a similar group of Elmira College representatives to discuss how the two institutions can build cultural exchange opportunities for students at both institutions.

The visit was coordinated by Dr. Ping Zheng, Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of International Learning.

“The initiation of this win-win partnership has signified that Elmira College is significantly increasing its presence internationally,” said Zheng. “This collaboration will offer new opportunities for students, faculty, and administrators from both institutions, offering them ways to explore culture, share resources, and create more value for institutional growth.”

During the visit, senior leaders from both institutions ceremoniously signed a formal agreement to collaborate and build new pathways for students.

For example, students at each institution can participate in a study abroad program. The students would travel and live for half a year to a year at the guest institution, but remain enrolled at their home institution. The credits earned while they are abroad would count toward their degree.

Students from EC will also have the opportunity to participate in Shenzhen’s Young Envoys Scholarship or “YES” program. This two-week summer session is for business students and offers a rich blend of academic, cultural, and industry experiences. Established by the Ministry of Education of China, the program awards scholarships for outstanding EC students to participate.

At YES, students visit technology companies in Shenzhen, China, like Lenovo and BYD, to see their latest innovations and speak to business leaders. They also get to explore Shenzhen Technology University’s advanced labs and technology research, which highlight the hands-on philosophy of the school, where the classroom is treated like a workshop, and students create products for their assignments.

With the agreement now in place, Elmira College and Shenzhen Technology University are laying the groundwork for expanded global learning experiences that connect classrooms, cultures, and careers. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to hands-on education and international engagement where students can gain a global perspective, practical experience, and a deeper understanding of the interconnected world they will enter after graduation.
