Sheila Kelley ’27, a Social Work major, was feeling anxious about the ongoing federal government shutdown and its impact on funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – commonly referred to as SNAP.
Her first thought was, “We need to address this locally and make sure no one is hungry.”
Kelley quickly moved from concern to action with the idea of starting a food drive.
Before leaping ahead, Kelley shared her thoughts and ideas with her professor, Dr. Kelly R. Smith, Assistant Professor of Human Services. Smith was on board and suggested making the food drive a class project for the Fall term Social Justice class. One of the course requirements is to complete a group project that addresses or highlights a social justice issue.
Kelley and Smith presented the idea to the Social Justice class, and they eagerly embraced it. They reviewed research looking at how many working individuals rely on SNAP subsidies so that they can direct more of their income toward other costs of living, such as rent or heating. In Chemung County, 14,000 individuals receive SNAP benefits.
As the class started discussing the idea, some of the students shared their own personal financial struggles. Ultimately, the class decided to focus on supporting members of the EC community who may be struggling who may be struggling, as well as the local Elmira community.
“I was very proud of my students for wanting to do this and recognizing other people’s needs,” shared Smith.
The class placed bins across campus and is promoting the drive to the campus community. The collections began on November 3 and will continue until November 19.
Once they collect the donations, the students will assemble food packages. They’ll utilize a campus survey to let those in need raise their hand anonymously. Those interested can discreetly pick up a food package from Smith’s office.
“We want to respect the privacy and dignity of whoever is in need,” explained Kelley. “And any remaining food items will be donated to a local food pantry.”
Members of the area community are invited to donate items to the drive. Suggested items include peanut butter, pasta, canned fruit and vegetables, canned chicken or turkey, applesauce, oats, microwavable meals, and hygiene products.
