During a formal reception, the Elmira College President's Council announced alumna Donna Hastings Homuth, MS '83 as this year's recipient of the President's Council Award. They also presented Kaitlyn Potter ’25 with the 2025 Stand Energy Prize Award.
The President’s Council Award recognizes outstanding Elmira College graduates who have distinguished themselves and the College by exemplary service in the College's greater community, and who, by giving generously of their time and talent, have improved the quality of the community.
Now retired, Homuth was a distinguished educator who taught English and Instructional Support for the Elmira City School District. At the same time, she has been an engaged community volunteer. She currently serves as President of the Family Reading Partnership of Chemung Valley, and is a member of the Meaningful Movies and Climate Justice Teams at The Park Church. Additionally, Homuth previously served as a board member of the John W. Jones Museum, the Arnot Art Museum, and as a member of the Ernie Davis Scholarship Committee. She also supports the Tanglewood Nature Center, the National Soaring Museum, and Habitat for Humanity in Ethiopia.
As Homuth accepted her award, she reflected on how her experiences getting a masters degree at EC “shaped” her as a teacher.
“My time at Elmira College was a gift. And for that I say, ‘Thank you!’” she exclaimed.

During the ceremony, Stand Energy Executive Vice President Larry Freeman and the President’s Council Business Relations Committee formally presented Potter with the 2025 Stand Energy Prize. The Prize was established through a generous endowment funded by the Stand Energy Corporation. Each year, a monetary prize is awarded to an outstanding Elmira College intern. Students are nominated by their supervisors and selected by the Council’s Business Relations Committee. These students are recognized for working independently while maintaining a team attitude and applying their academic preparation to a real-world work environment.
Potter is a Criminal Justice and Psychology double major from Eldred, New York. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa, and Psi Chi Honor Society, Captain of the Women’s Lacrosse team, a member of the Mock Trial Club, and a student worker in the Advancement Department..
For her internship, Potter interned with the Hon. Meagan Galligan, a Supreme Court Justice for the Sullivan Supreme and County Court. Her experience gave her a front-row seat to the workings of the court.
“Observation was one of my favorite aspects of my internship, but my supervisors also gave me a more hands-on experience with the Drug Treatment Court program,” she shared in a speech at the event. “The Drug Treatment Court impacted my outlook on people and the battles they might be facing. Most importantly, it taught me not to take my opportunities for granted and to remember, when going forward, that the most important part of the field of law is to help others.”
In the fall, Potter will begin to work toward her Juris Doctor at Penn State Dickinson Law.
Dr. Charles Lindsay, EC President, gave a third recognition during the event. Lindsay presented Michael Wayne, President’s Council Chair, a plaque to honor his many years of dedicated leadership to EC and the community. The role of the Council, composed of local business leaders, is to support Elmira College and to foster the College’s relationships with the surrounding area.
