Elmira College's Soaring Higher Student Leadership Program Helps Students Fly

On her first day entering the Soaring Higher Leadership program, Allyana Bartram '27, an Adolescence Education major, was asked about the last time she stood up for herself.

“I was unable to answer,” she confessed. But that quickly changed as Bartram and 13 students completed the 8-week leadership program.

“Throughout the course, I realized I had all the abilities and skills a good leader should acquire, and I asked myself why I wasn’t using them,” she continued. “I realized I had a tendency to hide, because I wanted to be ‘Mr. Nice Guy’ and appease everyone.”

Bartram’s self-reflections are an important part of the program, where individual and group activities uncover insights into students’ strengths and weaknesses. The students use their self-knowledge, such as identifying their values, to make better choices. Every other week, they listened to a new guest speaker about what they’ve learned as leaders.

“Through the class, I learned that life isn't about making everyone happy, and sometimes you need to stand up for what you believe is right and what is right for you,” said Bartram. “This class improved my overall confidence by reminding me of my skills and how I can effectively apply them to help others succeed, along with myself.”

To participate in the program, which is offered in the Fall and Winter terms, students must apply and be selected to attend the program facilitated by Jacqueline Sironen, Dean of Students; Larry Parker, Director of Social and Cultural Engagement; and Ytzel Flores Cristiansen, Associate Dean of Students. The content for the program is based on the books “Motivating the Middle: Fighting Apathy in College Student Organizations” by T. J. Sullivan and “Develop Your Leadership Superpowers: 50 Key Skills You Need to Succeed as a Leader” by Dietmar Sternad and Eva Kobin.

Like Bartram, Nada Mustafa '27, a Biology major, learned to reflect on how her actions and beliefs can impact others.

“Instead of trying to convince people to be interested in the programs I lead, I will show my passion for them, and the people who share the same passion will be inspired and want to contribute as well.”

For Riley Spencer '26, a Business Administration major, the program will help him reach his career goals.

“I will use what I learned from this class in my professional career,” he shared. “One of my career goals is to manage a group of people, and all the skills we learned in this class will apply. I feel 100% more confident in my abilities as a leader.”
