Elmira College’s Theatre Program will hold a spelling bee unlike any other for its Term II musical. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical brimming with quirky tweens, laugh-out-loud scenes, and heartfelt moments. Based on the witty, fast-paced book by Rachel Sheinkin and with a lively, original score by William Finn, it follows a group of endearing misfits vying for the spelling crown, all while facing their own personal hurdles. The show is a delightful mix of humor, heart, and unexpected twists.
“It’s been a blast bringing this oddball character to life,” shared Dionte James ’27, a Psychology major who plays an offbeat speller in the performance. “I love how the show mixes humor with real emotion. It’s a wild ride!”
“Spelling Bee touches on some important themes for young people like challenges with parents, competition, and friendship,” shared Sarah K. Chalmers, Lecturer of Applied Theatre and Theatre Program Manager. “ It's been a pleasure working with our students and community members to highlight these themes.”
Performances will run at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29. There are two matinee performances at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 and Sunday, March 30.
