Three Graduates Share How Gifts To Elmira College Made A Difference For Them

My name is James Blair. I’m a Psychology and Math graduate and I am part of the Promising Class of 2023. I have always been driven to be part of something that is greater than myself, a determination I gained from my parents. In all that I do, I give one hundred percent. For example, I have dedicated 15 years to practicing kung fu, five years to piano, two years of football that includes one year as team captain, and seven years on the Math Team. I also take great pride in the years I served in high school as a mentor to younger students, on and off the football field. Recently, I returned home to watch young adults I mentored walk across the stage at their high school graduation. And while most of them are now taller than I am, I have a great sense of pride knowing I helped them reach some of their dreams. I like to think that they will, in turn, strive to be their best wherever they go.

That’s why, when I was selecting a college, my number one goal was to find a place where I could continue to make a difference. After my first visit to EC, I was sold. It was large enough to reach my academic goals, while small enough to make a big impact. Since making the choice to attend Elmira College, I have never doubted my decision. I truly loved it here. Of course, I know my fellow classmates, but at EC, I also get to know my professors, the campus staff, and the local community. I was an Orientation Executive, working directly with first-year students to ensure their success. I was also part of the Student Alumni Council, Dance Marathon, Art Club, Psi Chi, Pi Mu Epsilon, Omicron Delta Kappa, Gold Key Event Coordinator, and assisted with multiple events on campus, including Octagon Fair, Mountain Day, May Days, and Reunion.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to find my place at EC and help others do the same.

Be it ever so,

James Blair ’23

My name is Ana Marotti ’23. A few days ago I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and proudly join the ranks as an Elmira College Alumni. This pride resonates even more knowing that I am stepping into the shoes of my best friend and mentor, my grandmother. She was my first inspiration and, will now be, my lifelong motivation for helping others.

I knew Elmira College was “my place” from the very start. The small class sizes, approachable faculty, and willingness to provide accommodations for my learning disability, all set me on a path to success. In my time here, I have been a resident assistant, Gold Key tour guide, and member of Sigma Theta Tau and Alpha Psi Omega Honor Societies. I have endured a global pandemic on the medical front lines, attending clinics in the hospital and providing comfort to patients unable to see their loved ones. All preparing me for a career I love.

In April, before I graduated, I accepted a position at Geisinger Community Medical Center Hospital in Pennsylvania, on their Pediatric/Acute Medical Surgical unit. I start my career in July, and I can’t help but think how proud my grandmother would be. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that Elmira has given me and without continued support from alumni and generous donors, I would not have had the opportunity to be where I am today.

Thank you to everyone that has supported students like me.

Be it ever so,

Ana Marotti ’23

My name is Lauren Woodcock. I’m a Speech and Language Disabilities graduate from the Communications Sciences & Disorders division and a member of the Promising Class of 2023.

To look at me today, you would never know I spent my junior year of high school obsessing over my impending future. I felt an immense pressure to “get it right,” to have it all figured out before leaving the comfort of my quaint hometown. Little did I know, the answer to my future was right in front of me. You see, my first-period teacher and close family friend brought her twins to work every morning. Like many twins, they were very premature and to make matters worse, one twin had suffered a stroke at birth. Now school age, the twins were drastically behind in development, requiring the help of a speech language pathologist. For a year, I watched their growth and transformation, it was truly incredible. They went from barely speaking to laughing and joking with me in full sentences. Prior to meeting the twins, I would have never even considered speech as a career path.

Fast forward to selecting a college. While I still hadn’t settled on a major, I knew I wanted to help people. I applied to several schools, but when it was all said and done, I found my place at Elmira College. As the valedictorian of my high school class of 17 students, EC gave me the academic rigors I was ready for while ensuring I received the same time and attention I was accustomed to. At EC, I knew I wouldn’t be just a number. I started as a Biology major; however, it only took one semester to realize speech was the place for me. Since changing my major, there hasn’t been a moment that I doubted my career path. With Elmira, I’ve had a wealth of experiential learning opportunities, I know I couldn’t find elsewhere, including:

  • The ability to start my Clinical experience my sophomore year,

  • Work with elementary students at a six-week Reading & Phonemic Awareness Program,

  • Earn 30 Clinical hours I can use toward grad school, and

  • Provide “maintenance therapy” at our Clinic to individuals that couldn’t afford the help without it.

Before coming to Elmira, I had no idea how rare it was for undergraduates around the country in my major to receive so much direct client contact. With each new client, I learn new ways to help and support someone. I love the process of puzzling out what works best for the two of us. And the scope of what I can do with my degree is incredible. I’m amazed at how much communication is woven into the fabric of our lives. In addition, I am more confident and poised than ever before. Elmira College helped me find my path and I’m so grateful.

Be it ever so,

Lauren Woodcock ’23
