With announced closure, learn how EC can help.arrow

This is the second of six weekly articles that serve as a guide to help incoming first-year students select their Pre-Orientation Program options and First Year Seminar courses.

Summer Orientation, held in July each year, gives incoming Elmira College first-year students a chance to sign up for classes, meet faculty, staff, fellow classmates, and familiarize themselves with the campus. Those registering for Summer Orientation I on July 14 & 15, also have a chance to attend a special Pre-Orientation Program (POP). These half-day experiences give you a chance to learn new skills, ease into college life, experience the surrounding community, and have some fun prior to the start of classes.

POPs will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, the day before Summer Orientation I. POPs participants will be housed on campus in a first-year residence hall with other POP participants on July 13 and July 14. Any family members traveling with you will be housed in Meier Hall for the two nights. You can sign up for a POP when you register for Summer Orientation I, although POPs are limited to 15-20 students and registration is first-come, first-served.

"POPs are a great opportunity for our new students to connect early with faculty, staff, and other students by being actively involved in an exciting and engaging experience," said Dr. Elizabeth Lambert, Vice President of Campus Life and Dean of Students. "The end goal is for students to go into summer orientation the following day having made new friends and already feeling at home here."

POPs include the following activities:

  • Learning chemistry in food prep by cooking an Italian meal in the EC kitchen lab

  • Playing video games in the EC Esports Gaming Lounge

  • Learning the chemistry of art materials and creating art from scratch

  • Exploring Watkins Glen, a famous gorge with stunning waterfalls

  • Playing mini golf and getting ice cream in nearby Corning, New York

  • Learning to play pickleball

  • Competing in hands-on safety experiences in the nursing facility simulation lab

  • Using games and team activities to learn tips for achieving goals

After the POP sessions are done, you and your family will enjoy dinner on campus. After dinner, you will enjoy campus activities while parents attend a special dessert reception with President Lindsay and Mrs. Lindsay.

Remember, choosing whether to attend a POP is not the only decision you have to make as an incoming student. Be sure to follow the rest of the Welcome Wednesday articles each week to learn about the First Year Seminar (FYS) course options you can choose from.
