With announced closure, learn how EC can help.arrow

This is the first of six weekly articles that serve as a guide to help incoming first-year students select their Pre-Orientation Program options and First Year Seminar courses.

At Elmira College, we’re here to help you at every step of your transition from home to college. During this journey, you’ll want to build connections and learn the critical-thinking skills to navigate college life. To help in that transition, we developed the Pre-Orientation Program (POP) and First Year Seminar (FYS), both of which combine interesting topics with instruction on “how to college.”

POPs are optional activities for incoming first-year students. They run the day before Summer Orientation and are designed to teach you skills to ease into college life, experience the surrounding community, and meet your fellow classmates and professors prior to Summer Orientation and the start of classes. You can sign up to attend a POP when you register for Summer Orientation. The POP sessions are limited to 15-20 students and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more about the POP options in the next Welcome Wednesdays article.

FYS at EC is part of a two-course program you’ll take in your first year. FYS is taken in Term I (fall) and First Year Writing is taken in Term II (winter). You have until the end of June to indicate your preferred Term I FYS courses and should have access to the registration form in your admissions materials. If you need assistance, reach out to the Admissions Office for further details.

But what are the First Year Seminar (FYS) course options?

The FYS courses cut across a wide range of fields, including the natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. They’ll help you transition to college, experience campus life, and engage with the Elmira community; help you become more skilled in reading, writing, discussing, and presenting on topics of interest; and serve as a launching pad for your success at EC.

They include topics students often express a strong interest in and serve as a launching pad for teaching some of the basics like critical reading and thinking, how to leverage campus resources, ways to engage and connect with the community, and the importance of having meaningful and respectful discussions on sensitive topics.

"We're excited to support students through their transition from high school to college," said Adam Giambrone, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Director of the First Year Seminar Program. "The First Year Seminar helps students build connections with fellow students, with Elmira College's support services, and with the local community. Our goal with FYS is to help students find their place at Elmira College and start a successful academic career that will prepare them for wherever they are going."

"Engaging, compelling, and meaningful courses are the means to getting students off to a strong start with the transition to college, academic success, and developing higher levels of critical reasoning," said Dr. Patricia Ireland, Provost. "Studying topics of mutual interest to students and their instructors provides an immediate connection with peers and faculty that will benefit students throughout their college years."

Future articles in the Welcome Wednesdays article series will delve deeper into FYS course options, helping you determine your top choices.
