The Office of Social and Cultural Engagement (SCE) creates opportunities for students to connect, engage, lead, and develop a sense of belonging at Elmira College.
The Office of SCE initiates and implements programs and events across campus to spread awareness about and celebrate world cultures. Their focus is on supporting all students and enriching the campus community through cross-cultural and social engagement opportunities.
From working with dining services to prepare traditional meals, to inviting guest speakers to share life and professional experiences, the EC community has the opportunity to participate in the experiences of other cultures together.
EC’s mission to help students become globally engaged students is accomplished, in part, by cultivating these opportunities in which faculty, staff, and students collaborate and celebrate each other.
The IDEA Center is located in the Campus Center and is designed to provide students with a supportive, student-focused space. It’s regularly used for casual student gatherings, club meetings and activities, and special speakers and events.
The Office of SCE is actively engaged with student clubs, honor societies, and one-on-one student mentoring. The Office provides advisory support to ensure students have the necessary resources and support throughout their entire EC experience. The Office of SCE also provides leadership development and programs centered around self-care, community involvement, and professionalism to help ensure student success.
SCE provides comprehensive support to the F-1 international student community throughout their Elmira College experience. Services include I-29 processing, immigration and SEVIS compliance, maintaining F-1 status, and guidance related to employment opportunities such as CPT and OPT.
Beyond immigration requirements, SCE helps international students navigate the transition to living and studying in a new country, connect with campus resources, engage with the College community, and feel like home at Elmira.
Faith-based mentorship at Elmira College offers all students a welcoming space to explore faith, values, purpose, and personal growth through conversation, reflection, and guidance.
Rev. Dr. Jeff Seeley serves as the Faith-Based Mentor within the Office of Social and Cultural Engagement, providing spiritual mentorship to help students connect faith with campus life. While his individual mentorship is rooted in a biblical perspective, Dr. Seeley fully welcomes and respects students of all faith backgrounds. He also leads EC’s interfaith programming and services, which aim to foster community, respect, and exploration between diverse religious perspectives, as well as providing faith-based counseling.
To connect with Rev. Dr. Seeley, call (607) 735-1196, email jseeley@elmira.edu, or stop by his office on the second floor of the Gannett-Tripp Library.
