Crafting The Vision: Students Create Digital Magazine

Elmira College’s unique Term III gives students the chance to take elective and travel courses that broaden their horizons and give them new perspectives. In Jan Kather’s Crafting the Vision course, the students got up and outside, heading to Elmira’s downtown area where they practiced photography and writing skills to create a digital magazine based on their explorations.

“We started the course with a field trip to gather images and pen alliterations that the class used to design a digital class page,” explained Kather. “Within a week the students learned and applied basic page layout principles to create their collaborative, online class book.”

“Exploring Elmira for poetic inspiration felt like diving into a world of sights, sounds, and stories,” shared Jazmine Knox ’26, a Nursing major in the course. “Every corner of the streets seems to hold so much history and emotion of the past.”

The results of the students’ creativity can be found in a digital magazine the class put together and published.

Selected work from the Crafting the Vision booklet developed by Joseph Spinato '27, an Adolescence Education: English major.

“Term III is the perfect time for taking a course like this, as being outside in spring weather, collaborating with classmates, and paying attention to the environment makes learning a pleasure,” said Kather.
