EC And Greater Elmira Communities Invited To Share Creativity at Campus Events

Elmira College students are inviting the EC and greater Elmira communities to come together and share their creativity at two upcoming campus events.

The first is the Third-Annual Poetry Slam beginning at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, in MacKenzie’s and the George Waters Art Gallery in the Campus Center. Marc Artuz '24, a Psychology and Human Services double major, is coordinating the event, which he first began after discovering a similar poetry slam while at an away game for basketball. This is Artuz’s final Poetry Slam before he graduates in May.

“Putting together my last poetry slam here at Elmira College has been very exciting and emotional for me,” said Artuz. “It was always an event about bringing people together, to spread awareness about mental health, and to create a communal space that allows for each and every person to learn a thing or two about the meaning of being themselves.”

This year’s Slam also includes student artwork on display in the George Waters Art Gallery, including some pieces by Artuz.

“To host this event one final time brings me joy to know it’s been successful, but also to know it’s my final one makes me wonder where all the time went these last few years,” he continued. “I guess you can say I’m thankful and couldn't have asked for a better community to serve then the students of EC. This wouldn’t be possible without them!”

The second event, Elmira’s Got Talent, is spearheaded by Emma Gentry '25 and students in the Alpha Psi Omega (APO) Theatre Honors Society and EC Theatre Club. The talent show invites students and members of the larger Elmira community to show off their skills while competing for a $100 grand prize. Artuz will also serve as the event host.

"Several students and I started this event because there are many talented Elmira College students. We thought this would be a fun way to highlight their many skills while inviting the community to take part as well," said Gentry, a Criminal Justice major. "We're grateful to Marc Artuz for agreeing to host the event and for the support of the EC Theatre Department, Alpha Psi Omega theatre honor society, and Theatre Club, as well as other staff groups on campus."

EC students and community members interested in singing, dancing, performing magic, doing acrobatics, or demonstrating some other talent must register by April 29.

Students and community members are also welcome to attend the talent extravaganza at 7:30 p.m., May 10 in the Gibson Theatre in Emerson Hall and can register here. Admission is free for EC employees, students, and for children under 12. For all others, admission is $5. Proceeds will benefit the APO honor society.
