Elmira College is a private liberal arts College located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Elmira College was the first college to offer a comprehensive curriculum for women, and is home of the Center for Mark Twain Studies. We are seeking a General Maintenance Technician to join the Facilities team.

The General Maintenance Technician (GMT) position is fast-paced and changes throughout the year to fit the needs throughout campus. The GMT is responsible for the maintenance on the Elmira College Campus, ensuring that it meets legal requirements and health and safety standards. The GMT is responsible for the ongoing preventive maintenance and repair work on facility mechanicals and other installed systems across campus. This role requires day-to-day coordination of building maintenance (reactive and preventive). The GMT works with the Facility Management Supervisors in managing all outside contractors in support of the campus operations, including maintaining records and contracts, managing project activities along with daily work orders. The GMT is the primary contact for facility related emergencies which may require evening, weekend, and holiday work and performs on-call responsibilities. Reporting to Trades Supervisor, the GMT provides facility specific recommendations/ advice on repairs and maintenance needs. The GMT should be professional, customer-focused, and able to work in a diverse and dynamic environment. The GMT must be able to use time and resources effectively and efficiently and have excellent interpersonal skills and organizational and project management skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform ongoing preventive maintenance and repair work on facility mechanicals, and other installed systems;
  • Perform general maintenance (e.g., change light bulbs, painting, and small general repairs, maintain exterior property including assisting in snow removal, etc.) and manual repairs as needed;
  • Troubleshooting elevator issues, alarms and other facility equipment or installed systems;
  • Perform facility inspections, prepare, and submit reports of conditions in the building and recommend actions to be taken;
  • Support any after hour building needs and activities as required;
  • Installs equipment and appliances.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3 years of experience preferred;
  • High school diploma or GED;
  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving history per employer’s insurance carrier;
  • Ability to use a computer/tablet for email and record keeping for Facilities Management;
  • Able to stand for prolonged periods of time; Ability to stoop, bend, twist, and reach;
  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds;
  • Maintain flexible work schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call as needed;
  • Ability and experience in using basic hand tools;
  • Ability to work from heights, using ladders, scaffolding and lifts, ladders up to 25’, 40+ feet in aerial platform and scissor lifts.

WORK LOCATION: On-site

COMPENSATION: $17-$18 per hour

This position is benefit eligible.
