Elmira College is a private liberal arts College located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Elmira College was the first college to offer a comprehensive curriculum for women and is the home for the Mark Twain Studies. We are seeking a Community Coordinator to join the Residence Life team.

The Community Coordinator is a live-in professional with the responsibility for the administration, programming, operation, and crisis management of two or more student residence halls, housing between 100 to 500 undergraduate students. As part of a 24-hour on-call duty rotation, the Community Coordinator supervises a team of undergraduate Resident Assistants, coordinates special projects, and collaborates with Campus Life staff and other departments to provide comprehensive services to students. This is a full-time, 10-month position reporting to the Associate Dean of Students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Community Development and Programming

  • Foster an inclusive residence hall environment that supports academic excellence, student development, and community responsibility.
  • Communicate residents' rights and responsibilities during the initial hall meeting and follow-up as needed.
  • Promote a positive living environment conducive to study, rest, and mutual respect.
  • Initiate regular communication with residents.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of community programming with a team of 5-16 Resident Assistants.
  • Coordinate and participate in hall programs addressing the needs, interests, and concerns of residents.
  • Host at least one campus-wide program each term focused on student development and holistic education.

Supervision Responsibilities

  • Train, supervise, support, and evaluate a team of 9-15 Resident Assistants.
  • Conduct weekly Resident Assistant staff meetings.
  • Meet with each Resident Assistant bi-weekly for performance evaluations.
  • Perform regular walk-through inspections of residence halls at least once a week.
  • Report maintenance and housekeeping issues, following up to ensure timely resolution.
  • Maintain accurate records related to building concerns, including damage investigations and inventory management.
  • Oversee fire drill evacuations, alarms, and emergencies while ensuring proper fire safety protocols are maintained.
  • Maintain up-to-date rosters of residents and coordinate room changes within residence halls.

Crisis and Conflict Management

  • Respond to residents’ health, safety, and emotional crises, providing support and ensuring confidentiality.
  • Refer students to appropriate College resources as necessary.
  • Demonstrate accessibility and responsiveness to students' personal, academic, and emotional needs.
  • Participate in the campus duty rotation, providing on-call crisis management.
  • Serve on the Conduct Committee, engaging in the student judicial process, including interviews and communication of judicial outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a Master's Degree is preferred.
  • 1-3 years of administrative experience in residence life, student activities, first year and/or multicultural programming, including student worker experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and Google Drive. Experience with Maxient, Jenzabar, and Navigate is a plus.
  • Strong training and presentation skills.
  • Ability to advocate for students within and outside the College community.
  • Demonstrated discretion, good judgment, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

WORK LOCATION: On-campus (residence hall). The position includes a private semi-furnished apartment with internet access and on-site laundry facilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment with some physical mobility required (walking, climbing stairs, and exposure to outdoor weather).
  • Frequent evening and weekend responsibilities, especially during the academic year.

COMPENSATION: A base salary of $42,327.20 plus free on-campus housing and flex meal plan for on-campus dining.

This position is benefit eligible.
