Elmira College Theatre will open its 2026-2027 performance season with Paul Slade Smith’s hilarious comedy Unnecessary Farce.
This fast-paced farce follows two inexperienced police officers who are sent to a hotel room to catch a corrupt mayor in the act. What should be a simple undercover operation quickly turns into a chaotic mess of mistaken identities, secret schemes, hidden cameras, and surprises.
As the characters struggle to keep their stories straight, everything begins to unravel in funny ways. This playful and energetic comedy reminds the audience how quickly even the best-laid plans can go completely wrong.
Guest directing the performance is Adara Alston, a Theatre instructor at Elmira College. Alston is a professional stage and screen actor and director based out of Ithaca and New York City. She earned a New York Emmy in 2022 as host of the WSKG-TV show Expressions.
“I’m excited for people to come see how funny this cast is and how they’re bringing their own unique spins and characterizations to these wild and outlandish characters,” said Alston. “I think that, in a time when things can feel very serious and very sad, and life can be hard, it’s nice to come to a play that’s just completely silly.”

“I’m really excited for the audience to see all of the movement the actors bring to the show and all of the work they’ve put into it,” shared Kaylee Kearney ’30, who plays Mayor Meekly in Unnecessary Farce. “Every movement is choreographed and carefully thought out.”
