G. Thomas Tranter, Jr. ’76 is a familiar face in the Elmira-Corning area. Throughout his career, Tranter has positively impacted the economic development, education, culture, and healthcare of the region. In recognition of his longstanding commitment to the local community and his many accomplishments, Tranter will receive the Elmira College 2026 Distinguished Achievement Award.
Tranter will be formally recognized at Reunion 2026 during the Annual Meeting at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 17, in Stephans Lounge, Meier Hall. The Annual Meeting is free and open to the general public—no registration required.
Now retired, Tranter was President of Corning Enterprises and Director of Community and Government Affairs for 20 years at Corning Incorporated. Prior to joining Corning, Tranter served as Chemung County Executive, Deputy County Executive, Horseheads Village Manager, and Executive Director of Chemung County American Red Cross.
Tranter’s success is evident in the collaborations and close relationships he formed with state and local government leaders to obtain grants, incentives, and revitalization money for the area. He was appointed by the New York State Governor to serve as the Co-Chairman of the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council for eight years.
Elmira College is one of many organizations that have benefited from his expertise. As a member of the EC Board of Trustees, he helped guide the College through periods of both struggle and growth.
However, Tranter’s commitment to the community extends well beyond EC. His service to area nonprofit organizations has been extensive. He has held chairman, vice chairman, and secretary roles for more than ten community nonprofit organizations. Some, like the Three Rivers Development Corporation and The Business Council of New York State, seek and support new business growth in the region. Others, like the United Way of the Southern Tier, help residents who need support with housing, food, education, and healthcare. Tranter also served on the Corning Guthrie Hospital board and led the community fundraising effort to build the new hospital.
Tranter earned his bachelor of science in Economics at EC and a Master of Professional Studies in Public and Community Services from Alfred University.
Alumni are invited to celebrate Tranter and other distinguished honorees by registering for Reunion and Family Weekend 2026. Take full advantage of the weekend’s events, including Octagon Fair, Tompkins Hall’s 100th Anniversary; meeting Dr. John F. Dolan, EC’s 16th President; and catching up with cherished friends.
