As students returned to the Elmira College campus at the end of August, Joyanna Lynn '27, an Art and Environmental Science double major, placed the final brush strokes on her mural. The artwork is now on display in the 1855 Room, the Elmira College coffee shop in the Campus Center.
The mural, which began the previous academic year, is more than a painting. For Lynn, it represents how "sustainability is not the work of one person: it is a force of many hands working together with the bigger picture in mind.”
That’s why Lynn invited the community to help paint the mural. She first proposed her idea to the organizers of the EC Climate Teach-In at the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year. After getting the concept and design approved, Lynn coordinated making it possible for attendees of the March 18, 2026 event to paint with brushes and with their hands, filling in her outline, similar to painting-by-numbers.
The Community Arts of Elmira - Elmira Infinite Canvas donated supplies, and some of the community muralists came to lend a hand as well. Their programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
While much of the mural was filled in during the Teach-In, there was plenty more to do. Lynn and volunteers, including Shiloh Williams '28 and Finley Watson '27, worked through the end of the academic year, trying to finish everything. But a few portions were left undone when Lynn had to leave for the summer break.
That’s why, as students arrived to start the 2026-2027 academic year, Lynn went to the 1855 Room and placed the final touches before signing her name.
"I wanted this mural to represent that sustainability is the work of many people, and what I hope those who lent me their hands and their time remember for years to come," she added.
