Dr. Matt Seybold, Associate Professor of American Literature and Mark Twain Studies at Elmira College, received a surprise during the recent 2026 Mark Twain Studies Quadrennial Conference.
At the event, Judith Yaross Lee, the President of the Mark Twain Circle of America, announced that Seybold earned the Thomas A. Tenney Award for Service. Seybold is the fifth and youngest person to receive the award.
"The Thomas A. Tenney Award for Service is presented in recognition of an individual who has given significant service to the field of Mark Twain Studies on behalf of the mission of the Mark Twain Circle of America,” Yaross explained to the conference attendees. “This year's recipient has done significant work over the last decade advancing the state of Mark Twain Studies by enlarging Twain's presence across multimedia platforms."
Among the contributions Yaross was referring to is Seybold’s podcast, The American Vandal. It is one of the most popular academic humanities podcasts in the world and regularly charts in more than 40 national markets. She also recognized his contributions to MarkTwainStudies.com, which has been visited by millions since its launch in 2016 and hosts a wide range of scholarly essays, recorded lectures, interactive maps, virtual tours, teaching resources, and digital editions of rare primary and secondary works.
In addition to managing the podcast and website, Seybold has published Twain-related essays in a wide range of venues, including Los Angeles Review of Books, Cleveland Review of Books, and North American Review, and he is frequently invited to provide his Twain expertise to national news outlets including The Atlantic, The Washington Post, C-SPAN, and MSNBC.
"I was totally surprised and obviously honored to be recognized by my fellow scholars,” shared Seybold. “It just so happened that later in the evening, after the award was presented, Bob Hirst, longtime editor of the Mark Twain Project, told some stories about Tom Tenney, which greatly added to my pride in receiving the award created in his name. A lot of hustle from a lot of people has gone into making Twain Studies a thriving field. And there's always more to do."
