For the 14th consecutive year, The Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation is helping Tioga County students pursue an Elmira College education, awarding a $15,000 grant that has now supported 55 students since 2013.
Among the recent students to benefit from the grant are Wyatt Blauvelt ’27, a Biology major from Barton, New York, and Gabrielle Boots ’29, a Biology major from Waverly, New York. In their thank-you letters, Blauvelt and Boots shared what receiving Mildred Faulkner Truman Foundation scholarships means to them.
“I love learning, and being able to attend college is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” wrote Blauvelt. “Additionally, attending Elmira College is even more special to me as it is not only close to home but is also the school where my mother completed her graduate work. Being able to still be around my family and friends while exploring new opportunities is hugely rewarding.”
“Elmira College has given me the opportunity to take part in an internship researching dune stabilization on Captiva Island, Florida,” wrote Boots. “As a first-year student, this is not an opportunity I would normally have, and I am excited to be able to continue throughout all four years! I have learned many new research methods that will be useful in the future of my education and career.”

This grant-in-aid opportunity for Tioga County students reflects her keen awareness of the importance of higher education and her compassion for her community."

Mildred Faulkner Truman was a lifelong resident of the Village of Owego, NY, who became a successful investor. Upon her passing in 1983, Faulkner Truman provided that the residuary of her estate be used to establish a foundation to fund grants to qualified tax-exempt organizations whose worthwhile projects benefit the residents of Owego and Tioga County.
