Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society again recognized Elmira College for its commitment to transfer student success by naming EC to its 2026 Transfer Honor Roll. Of the more than 700 four-year colleges considered, only 25% are selected for this distinction.
“This recognition is about much more than transfer agreements,” said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa. “Successful transfer happens when institutions intentionally design policies, practices, and campus cultures that help students thrive after they arrive. These colleges have demonstrated that transfer student success is not accidental. It is a strategic priority.”
“We’re honored to be among a prestigious list of institutions because it means we are helping students reach their goal of a four-year degree,” shared Dennis Kelly, Vice President of Enrollment Management at EC and an honorary PTK member since 2022. “Elmira College values the great contributions that transfer students make inside and outside the classroom, and we are continually innovating to make the transfer process even more seamless."
EC earned the PTK distinction by removing many of the barriers transfer students commonly face, particularly affordability and credit transfer. All PTK members transferring to Elmira, regardless of state or international residency, receive the EC PTK Scholarship, which is the largest academic award given to transfers at the College.
Transfer students may also be eligible for other awards such as the Transfer Achievement Award and the Scout Achievement Award. In addition, EC expanded its Soaring Eagles Take Flight initiative to include transfer students. The Take Flight initiative is available to incoming, full-time undergraduate New York State students. It combines scholarships with state and federal grants and awards to cover full-time tuition and mandatory fees.
To ease the transfer credit process, EC has built and strengthened agreements with area community colleges. For example, through Elmira’s partnership with Corning Community College, students with a grade point average of 3.3 or higher will receive a $20,000 Transfer Scholarship. Students transferring with a GPA of 3.2 and lower will earn a $15,000 Transfer Scholarship.
“While we’re making it easier for transfer students to attend EC, we’re also clearing additional pathways for them to find success,” said Suellen Nelles, Elmira College Senior Transfer Admissions Counselor. “Our students benefit from close relationships with faculty, staff, and alumni who provide mentorship, helping them prepare for successful careers. We’ve also built strong relationships with graduate institutions, such as Syracuse University, to help students go beyond a four-year degree.”
