EC researchers, alumni, and their families will soon find it much easier to revisit or discover EC’s rich history, traditions, and impact. Thanks to a $2,625 Digitization Grant from the South Central Regional Library Council (SCRLC), a complete archive of The Octagon, the Elmira College student newspaper that was published from 1871 to 2015, will be available online.
This is the second grant from the SCRLC for this project. The first grant led to the digitization of the 1871-1988 microform editions of The Octagon, which were then uploaded to New York State Historic Newspapers. This process includes making the documents searchable and accessible for all users. With this latest grant, the 1988-2015 editions can now follow the same process.
“We receive many requests for details from alumni,” explained Marge Kappanadze, Director of the Gannett-Tripp Library. “The Octagon is filled with stories and snapshots of student life available nowhere else. Our alumni are always extremely grateful for the valuable bits of information that fill gaps in family history and revitalize their memories.”
The digitization of The Octagon is part of Elmira College’s long-term plan to digitize its most popular archival materials. Yearbooks, course catalogs (sometimes called The Bulletin), and alumni magazines, as well as historical photographs from around campus, Mark Twain materials, and women’s suffrage materials, have already been digitized and uploaded to New York Heritage Digital Collections.
The archives’ collection of video recordings has also been digitized and will be uploaded after some editing. Once The Octagon has been fully digitized, the staff will turn their attention to digitizing the founding documents, dating from 1853.
The South Central Regional Library Council is one of nine Library Councils comprising the Empire State Library Network (ESLN). As a multi-type library consortium, SCRLC serves 87 members across 10,000 square miles in the counties of Allegany, Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, and Yates.
