Visitors can now explore the places that shaped Mark Twain's life and writing through a new, free digital experience connecting the most significant literary and historic landmarks in the City of Elmira. The Mark Twain Trail tour helps visitors discover the sites associated with the famed American author and his wife's family, the Langdons.
“The Mark Twain Trail tour connects local historical organizations and tourism partners in a new way that makes it easier to promote our many Twain-related landmarks,” said Dr. Joseph Lemak, History Instructor, Director of the Center for Mark Twain Studies. “Through this collaborative effort, each organization can now point our visitors to one digital tool that provides more than a map. It helps tell our region's story and the role the City of Elmira played in shaping Twain's legacy.”
Enthusiasm for Mark Twain has helped grow tourism to Chemung County. The self-guided tour helps improve visitors’ experience with an interactive map that helps them locate and learn about each landmark. Every stop includes historical information, visitor details, and hours when available. Featured sites include the Mark Twain Study and Mark Twain Archives at Elmira College, the John W. Jones Museum, the Chemung Valley History Museum, Woodlawn Cemetery, and other Twain-related destinations throughout the Elmira area.
"Our office regularly hears from Twain enthusiasts, as well as general visitors, looking for guidance on where to go and what to see in relation to Twain and the Langdon family. We're grateful to have the perfect resource to share with visitors,” said Alexis Rolston, Discover Chemung.
Rolston added that the tour can help tourists turn what might have been a single stop into a longer, multi-stop stay that benefits museums, attractions, local businesses, hotels, and restaurants throughout the county.
“Tourists come to Chemung County and the greater Southern Finger Lakes region for a variety of reasons, and this trail is a new opportunity to show them more of what the county has to offer. With several additional tourism initiatives in development, resources like this trail help encourage visitors to explore even more of Chemung County,” said Rolston.
