Recently, three elementary school children stepped into the historic parlor at Quarry Farm and shared their original fables where, about 150 years ago, Mark Twain entertained his own children with stories inspired by the tiles surrounding the room’s fireplace. The students earned the opportunity by winning the Center for Mark Twain Studies elementary school writing contest, which invites area students to emulate Twain and create original fables based on the fireplace tiles depicting characters from Aesop’s Fables.

The winners of the 2026 Quarry Farm Fireplace Writing Contest were:
  • Madigan Dean, Frederick Carder Elementary School (Corning, New York)

  • Reagan McCaffery, Frederick Carder Elementary School (Corning, New York)

  • Bryley Musto, Frederick Carder Elementary School (Corning, New York)

As part of the competition, the students write a short fable based on one of the tiles in the historic home where Mark Twain and his family summered for more than 20 years. It’s where Twain penned portions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.

The tiles feature characters from Aesop’s Fables, a collection of fables attributed to a slave and storyteller who lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 564 BCE. Legend has it that every night, Twain’s daughters insisted their father tell them a bedtime story based on the tiles. They required him to invent a completely new story every night; he couldn’t retell the Ancient Greek stories. The daughters would then summarily judge whether the story had any merit.

Reagan McCaffery of Frederick Carder Elementary School was one of three winners of the 2026 Quarry Farm Fireplace Writing Contest.

The contest is one of the ways CMTS encourages area elementary school teachers to discuss Mark Twain’s legacy in Elmira and the Southern Tier region of New York State. Students in second grade through sixth grade from schools in a 25-mile radius of Quarry Farm can submit creative writing stories. CMTS invites the student winners and their class to Quarry Farm to read their stories in front of the fireplace, just as Mark Twain did over a century ago. The students are then treated to Mark Twain’s favorite dessert: gingerbread, vanilla ice cream, and lemonade.
