On the eve of Commencement, during the Elmira College Graduate Reception, Alyssa Russell ’26, Class of 2026 President, reflected, “I remember the day I first toured Elmira College. I had no clue at the time what college was going to look like for me, but I knew after stepping onto this campus that this was the place for me to begin my journey.”
While Russell and the other members of the Ascendant Class of 2026 reminisced and celebrated their time as students, they were also reminded that their EC journey is not ending, but transforming.
“May you have great success, happiness, and good fortune as you begin your new lives as alumni," said Kat Slye-Hernandez ’12, Vice President of the Elmira College Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Slye-Hernandez reviewed the rights and responsibilities of alumni, encouraging students to stay connected, leverage – and become part of – the alumni network, attend Reunion events, and give what they can so that future generations can continue to thrive at EC.
After the formal remarks concluded, the Alumni Rings were awarded. This tradition gives two students who represent the spirit of the College special recognition.
This year's Alumni Ring recipients were Natalie Musolino ’26, a Childhood Education and Childhood Special Education double major, and Jacob Nasse ’26, a Nursing major.
The female ring was donated posthumously by Susan Cordes Blackwood ’62. Cordes Blackwood was an active member of the EC Alumni Association, attending countless events. She has donated towards student scholarships and the Fund for Elmira College and served as her class’s Reunion Chair.
The male ring was awarded by its donor, John “Jack” Hurley III ’71, who has been a dedicated and engaged member of the EC community for decades. Since joining the Alumni Board in 2021, he has played an active role in supporting numerous events, contributing not only his time and energy but also generously providing wine to enhance gatherings. A committed philanthropist, Jack has consistently demonstrated his support for Elmira College through his giving and leadership. He served as the Class of 1971 President and is notably among the first men to graduate from the College following its transition from an all-women institution in 1969.
Also announced was this year’s Outstanding Graduate Award, which recognizes a well-rounded student who is sincerely dedicated to the welfare of the College and student body. The student exemplifies citizenship, character, standing among peers, and contributions to extra-curricular life at Elmira College. This year's winner was David Lee ’26, a Business Administration major.
The Alumni Association Board of Directors then presented alumni pins to the graduating class, followed by a toast given by Slye-Hernandez.
