In 2012, when Dr. Charles “Chuck” W. Lindsay first traveled to the City of Elmira to interview for the position of Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Elmira College, it was a stormy journey. He and his wife, Janna Lindsay, had nearly non-stop rain for the duration of the trip. Yet, as Janna Lindsay tells the story, the moment they left the highway and began driving into Elmira, the sun came out.

“And the sun has been smiling on us ever since,” she fondly reminisces.

Chuck Lindsay accepted the Associate Dean role. It didn’t take long for his leadership qualities to be recognized, and he was soon promoted to Provost in 2015. Two years later, he became EC’s 15th President, and Janna Lindsay became the College’s First Lady.

Since taking their leadership roles, the Lindsays have led with high campus visibility, kindness, and courage. Under his leadership, Chuck Lindsay launched new academic programs that pair EC’s liberal arts with a career focus, steered the College through COVID-19, and helped strengthen its finances. He led the development of the 2023-2028 Strategic Plan that lays out a path for the College’s continued growth and stability.

Both Lindsays strengthened the College’s ties to the local community, serving on boards, building collaborations, and attending area events.

With the College in a stronger position, the Lindsays announced in October their plans to retire at the end of the 2025-2026 fiscal year so that new leadership could build on the work they accomplished.

As the sun begins to set on the Lindsays’ tenure, the campus and local communities have been finding ways to say thank you for their accomplished leadership.

At a recent ceremony, Elmira City Mayor Dan Mandell presented the couple with a key to the city, and State Senator Tom O’Mara and Assemblyman Chris Friend presented them with a special proclamation. The College’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to grant Dr. Lindsay President Emeritus status in recognition of his distinguished service to and his significant impact on Elmira College.

But the recognition did not end there.

Soon after Chuck Lindsay presided over his last EC Commencement Ceremony as EC’s President, the Board of Trustees announced an additional honor that reflects the close and personal connection the Lindsays had with students, faculty, and staff.

The Trustees decided to name the entire second floor of the Campus Center as ‘The Chuck and Janna Lindsay Dining Commons.’

In a speech Johanna Knickerbocker ’26, the Student Association president, gave, it is clear that the impact both Chuck and Janna Lindsay had was felt deeply by the students on campus.

“President Lindsay, from the student perspective, you weren’t just the president. You were the person who somehow knew our names, actually knew them. Not just once, not just in passing, but remembered them. And in those small moments, walking across campus, stopping to talk, asking how we were really doing, you made Elmira feel less like an institution and more like a home.”

“Janna, your presence here has been just as meaningful in ways that may seem quieter, but I promise you they were just as powerful. You showed up, again and again, not because you had to, but because you genuinely cared about this community and about us. You helped create the feeling that this campus extends beyond classrooms and offices. You made it warmer. More personal. More like home,” shared Knickerbocker.

The Dining Commons, which will be officially dedicated this fall, will include the large dining room, two private dining rooms, and the extensive preparation and serving kitchens.

A fundraiser is helping to raise money to support this honor, and anyone interested in contributing can make a gift between now and June 30, 2027.
