Elmira College representatives joined Tommy Hilfiger and members of the Hilfiger family on Wednesday, April 1, to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School People’s Place store on campus.

Made possible through the generous support of the Hilfiger family, the new store serves as a “learning lab” providing students with real-world experience at the intersection of fashion and business.

“This store reflects a shared vision I have with Elmira College—to create a space where the next generation of fashion professionals can learn by doing,” said Tommy Hilfiger. “We named it People’s Place in honor of my first store, which I opened here in Elmira in 1969 when I was 18. That experience taught me invaluable lessons about business, creativity, resilience, and taking risks—shaping everything I’ve built since. That’s the spirit behind this program. My hope is that students develop confidence in their ideas and use that as a foundation to build their own path. I’m excited to see what this next generation will create.”

As a hands-on learning environment, the store is managed by students in the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School under the guidance of Betsy Hilfiger and Dr. Alison Wolfe, Director of the Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Business School program at Elmira College.

All merchandise featured in the store has been donated by the Hilfiger family, with visual merchandising elements—including mannequins, fixtures, and archival pieces—sourced from the Hilfiger Family Archive.

Through the store, students gain experience across all aspects of retail operations, including merchandising, marketing, point-of-sale systems, data analytics, inventory management, budgeting, and customer relationship management. They also develop an understanding of profit and loss responsibility, preparing them for future careers in the fashion industry.

“The students and I are grateful for the outpouring of support from the Hilfiger family,” shared Wolfe. “We’re excited about how the store provides a visual showcase of the program to the community and prospective students. Its strategic location in a highly trafficked area of campus means visitors will see the academic culture of innovation our program brings.”

The store is on the first floor of the EC Campus Center, across from the 1855 Room. It will officially open on Thursday, April 9, to give students initial sales training for the remainder of the academic year. Operational hours for April 9 - May 16 are noon - 6:00 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, and from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The store will close for the summer with select openings for major campus events. The store will reopen in the fall with the beginning of the new academic year.
