Elmira College will host its fifth-annual Climate Teach-In on campus from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 18. The Teach-In is a full day dedicated to discussing the causes, intricacies, effects, and solutions to climate change. It’s a learning experience for students of all ages, and an opportunity for the local community to engage with the College. Attendees will find a variety of guest speakers, professor- and student-run panels, interactive displays, an Upcycle Flea Market, and a low-impact meal option in the Campus Center Dining Hall.
“We are thrilled to hold our fifth-annual Climate Teach-In at Elmira College,” exclaimed Trevor Browning, Associate Professor of Environmental Science.
Browning said that this year’s Teach-In includes some unique new events, including a K-12 sustainability science fair where students from Chemung Valley Montessori School, Notre Dame High School, and Horseheads Central School District will bring demonstrations to showcase.
“Additionally, we’re partnering with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to enhance communication between state agencies, the community, students, and educational institutions. The NYSDEC will hold a separate listening event on campus the night before the Climate Teach-In, and we’ll share some of the highlights at the Teach-In.”
The NYSDEC Region 8 listening event will begin at 5:00 p.m., March 17, in Stephan’s Lounge in Meier Hall on the Elmira College campus. Additional details will be shared as the event gets closer.
“I’m very excited to connect so many different people in an effort that will help everyone better understand climate issues in New York and worldwide. We invite all who are interested to join us for these discussions on climate and sustainability,” shared Browning.

Sessions are hosted by a combination of professors, students, and professionals from a variety of fields. Participants will share their research and experiences on a number of topics focused on the nuanced and widespread effects of climate change. Topics include “Religious Thought on Climate Change,” “Athletics and Climate,” “Public Health and Climate Change,” and many others. In addition to traditional panels, there will be a number of interactive events, including a networking session and a production from the Elmira College Theatre Department.
“The panels are a great way to listen to the interdisciplinary aspects of climate change. Whether your interest is athletics, healthcare, natural sciences, social sciences, or policy, it is affected by climate change, and it is crucial to have a certain level of climate consciousness,” said Emma Guthrie ’26, a triple major in Biology, Biochemistry, and Environmental Science.

All of the above events are free and open to the campus community and the general public. A low-impact lunch option that uses locally-sourced ingredients, provided by Parkhurst Dining, will be available from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Dining Hall in the Campus Center.
