Ashlee Donahue `28 and Cameron Dumas during a rehearsal for EC Theatre’s performance of Twelfth Night.
The Elmira College Theatre will soon perform Kwame Kwei-Armah and Shaina Taub’s musical adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. This romantic tale maintains many aspects of the original, from mistaken identity to gender disguise to plenty of hijinks.
As in the original, the performance follows the story of twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated by a shipwreck and washed up on the coast of the mythical island of Illyria. There, Viola disguises herself as a man and sets off the classic love story.
“This play is timely in so many ways,” shared Sarah Plotkin, who is guest directing the musical. “It celebrates queerness and the breaking down of gender norms. It shows us the power of walking in someone else’s shoes, and it reminds us that hope is possible even when things feel scary and uncertain.
Plotkin is based out of Ithaca, New York, and brings experience as an educator and director. She also advises on the history and cultural accuracy of a performance.
“Sarah Plotkin brings a wealth of experience to the Elmira College Theatre students,” said Sarah K. Chalmers, EC Lecturer of Applied Theatre and Theatre Program Director. “As a director and an educator, Sarah creates an environment where all participants can bring their full creativity and collectively find the heart of the piece. Her sense of mischief and collaborative spirit are a boon for our students.”
Among those students benefiting from Plotkin’s directions is Annaka Stauring ’29. She has enjoyed getting to know the characters in the play.
“All of the characters are so vibrant and life-like,” exclaimed Stauring. “They bring so much excitement and energy into the show. Even the side characters bring so much life into the show that it's impossible to think of it without them.”
