After eight years of transformational leadership, President Chuck Lindsay will continue to lead the College through the 2025–2026 academic year as the Board begins a thoughtful transition process.
Elmira College President Charles W. Lindsay, fifteenth president of the College, has announced plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2025–2026 academic year, effective June 30, 2026.
Reflecting on his tenure, President Lindsay expressed his deep appreciation for the honor of serving as president of Elmira College for the past eight years, and for the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated and talented group of faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and alumni.
“Together, we have achieved a great deal of progress over the past several years,” said Lindsay. “Now it is time to prepare for new leadership that can continue building on this momentum and take the College to the next level. This decision reflects both personal reflection and my confidence in the College’s direction. I look forward to continuing our important work throughout the year ahead.”
During Lindsay’s presidency, Elmira College has made substantial strides in strengthening its financial position, growing enrollment, and advancing student success. The College has significantly reduced institutional debt, achieved notable increases in giving over the past two years, and secured reaccreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education on all seven standards.
Under his leadership, the College has also expanded its academic offerings with career-focused programs designed to meet the needs of today’s students, while enhancing campus life with new co-curricular opportunities such as flag football, pep band, competitive dance, and club ice hockey. The return of men’s and women’s lacrosse, the construction of a new turf field, and strengthened relationships with the City of Elmira and the surrounding region have further advanced the College’s momentum.
George H. Winner, Jr., Esq., Chair of the Elmira College Board of Trustees, extended the Board’s gratitude:
“On behalf of the Trustees, I want to thank Dr. Lindsay for his outstanding leadership and accomplishments during his eight years of service. Under his guidance, Elmira College has made tremendous progress—academically, financially, and institutionally. His vision and commitment have positioned the College for a strong and successful future.”
The Board affirmed that Elmira College’s future is bright, grounded in recent achievements and the enduring strength of its community. A search for the next president will begin in November 2025, with the goal of identifying a successor by spring 2026. A Presidential Search page will be created on elmira.edu to keep stakeholders informed throughout the process.
