Elmira College has a reputation for creating a tight-knit community on campus. This is a place where students, faculty, staff, and alumni get to know each other and support each other.

The College leadership also understands that it takes time and effort to maintain those close relationships once students graduate and become alumni.

“As a way to keep and deepen alumni ties, we hired three regional advancement officers to meet alumni where they live and work: Lisa Titus in the Mid-Atlantic, Michael Sarro in the Northeast, and Lauren Zuschlag in the Southeast.,” said Paula Lee Hobson, Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

“I am delighted to share that the impact of the remote team can already be seen, from a sharp increase in regional alumni-hosted events to the significant increases in philanthropic support for the College’s key initiatives,” Hobson added.

The trio is finding new ways to engage with EC community members who, living further away, can’t easily hop into their cars to attend campus events. They’re doing this in two ways.

First, they’re fostering more local connections among alumni. Titus, Zarro, and Zuschlag help alumni to host events in the cities where they live. These regional events bring together alumni of all ages to learn about each other and discuss their shared EC experiences. Alumni gather in homes, at restaurants, at sporting events, and even go on hikes together, building new friendships

Second, they’re connecting alumni with current students through EC’s Under Wing Mentoring Program, which teaches students job-hunting techniques and business etiquette. An essential aspect of the program is connecting students with alumni mentors who help students navigate to success in their chosen career fields. Alumni share their experiences, help students network, and find internship and career experiences. The number of students signing up for the program has doubled since last year, increasing demand for alumni mentors across all career fields.

So, who are the advancement officers doing this work?

Titus lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and serves alumni and EC community members living in the mid-Atlantic states.

A Pennsylvania native, Titus graduated from Lehigh University and worked for her alma mater, Moravian College, as well as Muhlenberg College, Bucknell University, and Princeton Theological Seminary, serving in annual giving, major gifts, and planned giving roles. She also served as an associate campaign director, focused on raising scholarship funds. A scholarship student herself, Titus appreciates the thoughtful philanthropy that makes education possible.

Sarro grew up in the Boston, Massachusetts area and is getting to know EC’s alumni and students’ families in New England and New York City.

After graduating with a bachelor’s in Communications from Stonehill College, he earned a master’s in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He gained advancement experiences at Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Ursuline Academy, and Xaverian Brothers High School. He’s also worked in professional athletics roles, including seven years in marketing and media relations for the Denver Broncos.

Zuschlag resides in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Her focus is on engaging EC stakeholders in the Southeast.

While currently enjoying the warmer climate and beachy terrain of Myrtle Beach, Zuschlag grew up in Greenville, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Ithaca College.

She has spent nearly two decades in regional advancement roles at Slippery Rock University, Thiel College, and the University of California, Los Angeles.

Although focused on different regions, the trio shares a common goal–to foster ever closer relationships with the people that make up EC’s special and growing network of alumni, friends, and parents.

They’re eager to hear from stakeholders near and far.
