The Fall Trouble Begins lecture series, presented by the Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies, is celebrating its 40th anniversary by hosting a special guest.
Pulitzer-Prize-winning biographer Ron Chernow will conclude his Mark Twain book tour with a stop at Elmira College to give a talk about his comprehensive biography of Twain, America’s most beloved humorist and the largest literary figure this country has produced.
While posterity cherishes an image of Mark Twain as a mustachioed man in a white suit, dispensing witticisms with a twinkling eye, in reality, he was a complex and contradictory man. Although he looms large in the public imagination, most of us know very little about him. Now, in this highly anticipated and revelatory new book, Mark Twain, Chernow brilliantly illuminates the full, fascinating life of the writer long celebrated as the father of American literature.
Chernow is the prizewinning author of seven previous books and the recipient of the 2015 National Humanities Medal. His first book, The House of Morgan, won the National Book Award, Washington: A Life won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, and Alexander Hamilton—the inspiration for the Broadway musical—won the George Washington Book Prize. He has twice been a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and is one of only three living biographers to have won the Gold Medal for Biography of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A past president of PEN America, Chernow has been the recipient of nine honorary doctorates.
The talk will begin at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 8, in the Elmira College Gibson Theatre. Like all CMTS events, Chernow’s speech is free and open to the public. However, seating is limited, so attendees must register for the event, and tickets are limited to two per person.
Chernow’s speech is the first of three public lectures in the Fall Trouble Begins series. Additional Trouble Begins lectures will be given in the Quarry Farm Barn at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, and Wednesday, October 29. You can find the full schedule and additional information on the CMTS 2025 Fall Lecture Begins website page.
