Washington Monthly Ranks Elmira College Among Best Bachelor’s Colleges

The Washington Monthly released its national rankings on Tuesday, with Elmira College making the list of 208 Best Bachelor’s Colleges in the nation.

Washington Monthly’s rankings specifically look at how well colleges recruit and graduate students of modest means, produce the scholarship and scholars that drive economic growth and human flourishing, and encourage students to be active citizens and serve their country.

According to the Washington Monthly website, “We rank schools based on their contribution to the public good in four broad categories: access, affordability, outcomes, and promoting public service.”

This is a considerable change in the ranking methodology over previous years, and was largely the result of the publication's new ranking for the 139 universities that averaged more than $100 million in research expenditures over the past three years.

Part of EC’s Mission is to provide a collaborative and supportive environment that enables students to become active learners, effective leaders, responsible community members, and globally engaged citizens. Nearly all undergraduate students are required to complete a set amount of community engagement hours, and 97% of students complete at least one internship, both of which help build essential skills for career success and community involvement.

At the same time, EC has been removing barriers to access for students, launching the Soaring Eagles Take Flight initiative in 2023. In this program, EC covers out-of-pocket costs for undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees for eligible incoming undergraduate New York State students. And, starting in January 2026, incoming transfer students will also be eligible.

Inclusion in Washington Monthly’s rankings underscores EC’s dedication to access, service, and student success.
