Julianne Deegan Baumann MS '75 to Be Honored During Reunion 2025

In a career that began in 1973, Julianne Deegan Baumann MS ’75 supervised many aspects of life at Elmira College. At the same time, she served the Elmira community, providing her expertise to the board of directors at non-profit organizations. To recognize her tireless service to Elmira College, Baumann has earned EC’s 2025 Distinguished Service Award.

Baumann will be formally recognized at Reunion 2025 during the Annual Meeting at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 20, in Stephans Lounge, Meier Hall. The Annual Meeting is free and open to the general public—no registration required.

Born and raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Baumann left her hometown to attend Alfred University. There, she earned a degree in History and was nominated Outstanding Senior. After she graduated, Baumann took a role supervising students at Elmira College. She began in Perry Hall but soon moved to Twin Towers B to supervise the 150 women residents residing there. During this time, Baumann recalled joining EC’s faculty and administrators on a college-sponsored educational trip to Italy, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt.

Baumann earned her masters in Education in 1975 and became the first full-time Higher Educational Opportunities Program Director. In this role, she was selected by the New York State Department of Education to serve as a grant-writing and reporting consultant to other higher education institutions.

From there, Baumann continued to rise in the ranks at EC. She was promoted to Director of Residence Life and then Director of Campus Life and Dean of Students. She supervised various important functions for students, including residence life, student activities, health services, counseling services, career services, campus ministry, campus security, and the student government.

In 2004, Baumann was promoted to Vice President of Enrollment Management and Campus Life, which added supervision of the Admission and Financial Aid teams. In this role, she implemented and supervised a retention program, hiring the first Director of Student Support Services.

Bauman retired in 2014. Throughout her time at EC, she attended and supervised countless events and was always supportive of the students. She served as the Patron Saint for the Class of 2000 and, in 1998, received the Douglas Anderson Award, which recognizes administrative leadership at EC. Her dedication to the College didn’t wane after her retirement. She has continued to volunteer and serve on committees. She’s been an active member of her class and supports student scholarships and the Fund for Elmira College.

Beyond her work at Elmira College, Baumann served on the YWCA Board of Directors for five years and as a board member for the Chemung County Economic Opportunity Program. In 2005, Baumann was selected as the Chemung County Woman of the Year.

Alumni are encouraged to register for Reunion 2025 to take full advantage of the weekend’s events and join the campus community in celebrating Baumann, other distinguished honorees, such as Pat Thompson ’75, MS ’88, while catching up with cherished friends.
