Now in its third year, the Elmira Civil War Symposium, organized by The Friends of the Elmira Civil War Prison Camp and sponsored by Elmira College, is making a few changes. This year, all of the events will take place on Saturday, July 26, and are free and open to the public; no registration is required.
The Symposium is an opportunity to learn about Elmira’s role in the Civil War through lectures and tours. This year includes a Groundbreaking Celebration.
The day’s schedule includes three lectures from 9:00 a.m. to noon with the keynote presentation by Robert Crickenberger, President of the Friends of Point Lookout. His speech is titled, “Point Lookout, Elmira, and the Second Wave of Prisons.” The presentations will be in Stephans Lounge, Meier Hall, on the EC campus.
From noon to 4:00 p.m., attendees can enjoy an open house at the Barracks site on Winsor Avenue. There will be guided tours, reenactor demonstrations, book signings, and light refreshments. At 1:00 p.m., Dr. Michael Gray, author of The Business of Captivity, will give a speech titled “Life on the Inside” that will discuss how troops from both sides of the war spent their time at the Elmira Prison Camp.
At 3:00 p.m., a Groundbreaking Celebration will feature plans for an Elmira Civil War Visitor Center.
