Aaron Kather, Assistant Professor of Art at Elmira College, earned third prize in the Over 21 category at Elmira Downtown Development’s recent 2025 Annual Street Painting Festival.
“This was my first time street painting!” exclaimed Kather. “I’ve always enjoyed the Elmira Street Painting Festival as a spectator, and I decided that this was the year to finally participate.”
Kather drew a rose based on a real rose he photographed two years ago at the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden in New York City. Despite less than ideal conditions at the start of the festival, Kather said the experience was worthwhile.
“The rain and the wet pavement in the morning were frustrating, but I had fun and I definitely learned a lot,” he shared.
Kather was not the only EC representative at the event. David Bishop ’81, Elmira College Art Therapy Instructor, and alumna Emily Solometo MSEd ’08, who are both regular participants in the festival, also chalked up original designs in this year’s event. Bishop produced a Statue of Liberty portrait that includes plenty of purple chalk, and Solomento, an Art Teacher in the Elmira City School District, drew her daughter in a yellow blouse, holding a kitten. Some of Solometos’s young students also created chalk drawings near hers.
Given this year’s success, Kather added that he looks forward to participating again next year.
