The spring 2025 The Trouble Begins Lecture Series presented by the Center for Mark Twain Studies (CMTS) will hold a session about the restoration of the Mark Twain Study at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 14 in the Quarry Farm Barn. At the event, which is free and open to the public, attendees can learn more about the measures being taken to preserve the Study for future generations.
The event will feature two people directly involved in the Study’s restoration.
Steve Jordan, Historic Preservationist, will give the first presentation titled “Restoration of the Mark Twain Windows.” He’ll describe the window restoration process and the special issues he managed in returning the windows to their original condition as best as possible.
Jordan finished restoring the windows in August 2023. Few have his specialized knowledge. He previously served as the rehab advisor for the Landmark Society of Western, New York; an architectural conservator for Bero Architecture; and authored several books about window restoration.
Alicia Campbell will give the second presentation titled “Mark Twain Study: Analysis of Original Interior and Exterior Finishes.” She’ll share the method she used to determine the original materials and colors of the Mark Twain Study when it was constructed in 1874.
Campbell, of Campbell Restoration and Consulting, has been working on restoration projects since 1993. She studied paint analysis at the Frank S. Welsh Co. in the late 1990s and has since performed independent paint analysis work in the Rochester, New York area. She and her husband worked on restoring their five historic properties, receiving the “Historic Home Award” and the “Blood, Sweat, and Tears Award” from the Landmark Society of Western New York.
The Trouble Begins Lectures are open to the public. The Series will continue on Wednesdays throughout May at the Quarry Farm Barn.
7:00 p.m., Wed., May 21: “Mark Twain and the ‘Commerce of Disease’” Jess Libow, Haverford College
7:00 p.m., Wed., May 28: “Mark Twain’s Political Critique of Divine Providence: Joan of Arc and Personal Recollections” Bernard J. Dobski, Assumption University
In 1984, the Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies initiated a lecture series, The Trouble Begins at Eight lecture series. The title came from the handbill advertising Mark Twain's October 2, 1866 lecture presented at Maguire's Academy of Music in San Francisco. The first lectures were presented in 1985. By invitation, Mark Twain scholars present lectures in the fall and spring of each year, in the Barn at Quarry Farm or at Peterson Chapel in Cowles Hall on Elmira College's campus. All lectures are free and open to the public.
