Elmira College will soon hold its 28th Annual Julia Reinstein conference with a special keynote address that is free and open to the public. Dr. Alicia Swords, Professor and Department of Sociology Chair at Ithaca College, will discuss themes from research she collected working with social movement organizers in a presentation titled, “Building a New and Unsettling Force: Lessons From Social Movements Past and Present.” The event, sponsored by EC’s Women’s and Gender Studies program, is from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Monday, March 24, in the Peterson Chapel in Cowles Hall.
A New York State native, Swords has traveled extensively, living and working in Chile, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. For the past two decades, she has researched social movement organizers and captured her findings in her book, Social Change: Movements, Politics, and Technology, which is scheduled to launch this year. As a professor, Swords enjoys connecting students with opportunities for civic engagement locally, nationally, and internationally.
"Dr. Alicia Swords has been researching social change in a number of different countries for many years,” shared Dr. Martha Easton, Associate Professor of Sociology, Social and Behavioral Sciences Chair. Easton coordinates the Symposium with the help of faculty and students.
“The politics of our times make the issue of social change fundamentally important, and we are looking forward to having this conversation."
The Julia Reinstein Symposium is made possible by a bequest from Julia Reinstein '28, an EC alumna who was a feminist, early lesbian activist, and strong supporter of women's issues.
