Legendary NHL Coach, EC Alumnus to Deliver 2025 Commencement Address

Barry Smith ’78, a Tonawanda, New York native, has had a well-decorated professional ice hockey coaching career that includes seven Stanley Cup Championships and induction into two sports halls of fame. Before joining the professional ranks, Smith began his career in 1975 with the Elmira College Soaring Eagles.

During his six seasons at the helm of the Purple and Gold, Smith guided the men's ice hockey program to two NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back New York Collegiate Hockey Association (NYCHA) titles in the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons. Under his leadership, the team scored a program-high 248 goals during the 1978-79 campaign. The following year, the Soaring Eagles won 25 games and reached the NCAA title game, ultimately finishing as national runners-up. While he was coaching, he earned a master's in education from EC.

In 1981 Smith left EC to study European Hockey and coach in Sweden until 1983 when he went to Norway. In 1985, Smith joined the Buffalo Sabres where Scotty Bowman mentored him. Smith joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990 and enjoyed Bob Johnson’s mentorship. The Penguins won their first Stanley Cup the season Smith joined in 1991. Smith then rejoined with Bowman and helped the Detroit Red Wings earn three Stanley Cup Championships in 1997, 1998, and 2002. He went on to help the Blackhawks secure titles in 2013 and 2015. Smith has also coached international teams including SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League, Djurgardens IF in the Swedish Elite League, and was assistant coach to the Swedish Olympic team in 1998.

In 1992, Smith was inducted into the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame for his work as a member of the football and men's ice hockey teams. More recently, he was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame as one of 15 members inducted into the Class of 2018.

Smith and his wife Mary Smith have been married for 52 years. Their son, Ryan Smith, graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2002 and recently retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Ryan Smith and his wife Leah Smith, a retired Air Force Major, have been sailing the past year with their five children. Their daughter, Molly Smith, graduated from Cornell University in 2007. She is currently the Vice President of Leasing for Simon Property Group and her husband, Rich Monopoli, is the Senior Vice President of Development at BXP.
