Thanks to the efforts of Valerie Rosplock, Executive Director of Grants Administration, and Dr. Milissa Volino, Director of Nurse Education, Elmira College recently received a generous $150,000 grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation’s Healthcare Workforce program. The grant will fuel EC’s “Growing Future Nurses: Cultivating Holistic Care Providers Through Innovative Simulation Education” program that supports EC’s continued focus on quality hands-on experiences to train the next generation of professional nurses.
In addition, EC’s partnership with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine means the funding will support LECOM medical students who also use the simulation center.
The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation grant provides funding for three new high-fidelity simulators to replace those purchased in 2014 and supports the development of several simulation scenarios focused on incorporating spirituality into the holistic care of patients. The high-fidelity simulators are a part of the College’s simulation center located in Cowles Hall. The simulation center is a four-room suite with two separate debriefing rooms and integrated audio-visual equipment for training between faculty and students. Established in 2014 by an economic development grant, foundations, and alumni donors, the original simulators were approaching the end of their utility and unable to take software updates needed to provide effective simulations.
“We are deeply honored by the wide-ranging impact of our work and by the dedication of our grantees across New York State,” said Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, Chief Executive Officer of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation. “We’re inspired by the compassionate legacy of Mother Frances Cabrini, as this year marks a significant milestone in our grantmaking, as we surpassed $1 billion in grants since our founding. This moment fuels our commitment as a Foundation to look toward the future, where we will continue making bold investments in a healthier, more equitable future for all.”
What is a high-fidelity simulator? Think of it as a life-sized and life-like mannequin that can simulate a wide range of actual medical situations in real-time, such as birthing a child or having a heart attack. Two adult mannequins can talk to the students as a live patient would. A newborn infant mannequin and an adult female mannequin give students experience in providing care during birth as well as simulations for obstetric emergencies. The adult mannequins also provide a range of opportunities to practice advanced lifesaving skills using realistic code scenarios. Research shows that hands-on scenarios are one of the best ways to increase learner engagement, which is why it’s critically important that nursing students experience their first emergency situation in a safe and controlled setting with faculty oversight.
“This grant could not have been awarded at a better time, since the current high-fidelity simulators were nearing the end of their life expectancy,” confirmed Volino. “We look forward to the new simulators and appreciate the financial support from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation’s Healthcare Workforce program grant to enhance our simulation program to offer experiences in spiritual care, a necessary component of holistic care.”
