The Elmira College Student Kitchen has been open for one year, providing students a place to practice their culinary skills while saving money when they stay on campus during breaks. As this year’s winter break approaches, the EC Equity Committee is collecting food donations to ensure every shelf is full for the students staying on campus.
“The idea for the Student Kitchen came about through a Needs Assessment survey sent to international students,” explained Larry Parker II, Elmira College Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Title IX Coordinator. “The students shared how the dining hall is closed during breaks and there aren’t many restaurants close by that they can walk to, and they aren’t able to cook much in their residence halls.”
Located in the Catering Kitchen adjacent to Stephans Lounge in Meier Hall, the Student Kitchen has a full range of kitchen equipment, including pots, pans, mixing bowls, and an oven. Ideally, the kitchen is stocked with food items international students and student-athletes staying on campus can use to supplement their meals.
If you’d like to help stock the kitchen with non-perishable food items, reach out to Parker or Sydney Stringham ’19, MSEd ’21, MS ’23, Director of Alumni Engagement. They collect food items for the Student Kitchen throughout the year.
