Elmira College Honors Distinguished Legacy: Dr. Carol Lenhart Conferred Professor Emerita Status

The Elmira College Board of Trustees has conferred the status of Professor Emerita to Dr. Carol Lenhart, who recently retired after serving for nearly 20 years as a professor of Criminal Justice.

Emerita and emeritus status is given to retirees in recognition of their dedication to the College and outstanding contributions to their discipline.

Lenhart had a 25-year career working for Eastman Kodak Company before she decided to become a College instructor. After she left her professional career she earned a master’s and doctorate in Criminology at the University of Delaware. She taught classes at the University of Delaware and Wilmington College before taking a full-time role teaching Criminal Justice at Elmira College in 2005.

At EC, Lenhart brought expertise in several topics, including inmate litigation, prison litigation reforms, policing, profiling, the history of corrections, and youth violence. She served as an advisor to the EC Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, and the Criminal Justice Club.

Lenhart sometimes brought her outside interests, including her love of quilting and local history, into the classroom. She taught a Term III course called Women and Quilting in American Society.

During her tenure at EC, Lenhart received several honors, including the 2024 Student Association Faculty Appreciation Award selected by students, for excellence in the teaching profession, interaction with students, and contribution to the quality of the College.

“I am so grateful to have had Dr. Lenhart as a professor at Elmira College,” shared alumna Mary Preston ’17, a lawyer for New York State in the Office for Information Technology Services. “She is brilliant beyond words and her passion inspired me during my career at Elmira College. Each one of her classes challenged what I already knew and pushed me to be a better student and person. Her office door was always open for students, and I always appreciated being able to talk to her. Whenever I think about my time at Elmira College, talking with her and being in her classes are some of my favorite moments that come to mind.”

Lenhart is keeping active in retirement and is often seen on campus conducting research on the history and anecdotes of Middlebury Academy in the Gannett-Tripp Library.
